Upcoming Sound baths and Gong baths
Here are details of my upcoming sound bath and gong bath sessions. If you have already attended sound baths before, hopefully this will give you everything you need to choose a date and book your place. If you are new to sound baths, not sure what to expect, or wondering whether a session is right for you, please do have a look through the information on the site first. You are also very welcome to get in touch, and I am happy to answer any questions before you book.
David’s training: Please note I am currently still completing my training with the British Academy of Sound Therapy. Once completed, I will hold a Diploma in Group Sound Relaxation Therapy. The Academy has over 25 years’ experience of working with sound, researching its health benefits and training practitioners like myself.
Learning to work with sound
At the moment, I am working towards a Diploma in Group Sound Relaxation Therapy with the British Academy of Sound Therapy.
That training is helping me understand sound baths as more than simply playing beautiful instruments in a peaceful space. There is a method behind it. Different instruments can create different responses, and the order, timing and way they are played all form part of the session.
The aim is to support people into a deeply relaxed state, similar to meditation, where the mind has a chance to quieten and the body has time to settle.
But the method is only part of it.
A good session also depends on paying attention to the people in the room. Some groups may need something very gentle and spacious. Others may respond better to a fuller, more varied sound. Part of my training is learning how to notice that, respond to it, and shape the session with care.
Most sessions will be created for general relaxation and wellbeing. From time to time, I will also offer sessions with a more specific focus. These will still be open to anyone, but the sounds and structure will be chosen with that theme in mind.
What to expect from a sound bath
No two sound baths are ever exactly the same, but the basic shape of the session is usually similar.
You will be asked to arrive on time so there is chance to complete a consent form, get settled on your mat or chair, and begin the session calmly. Once the session has started, you will not usually be able to join, as others will already be moving into relaxation.
During the session, you can lie down, sit, close your eyes and simply listen. If you need to open your eyes, sit up or step out quietly, that is absolutely fine. Some people remain fully awake, some drift in and out, and some fall asleep. There is no right or wrong way to experience it.
Towards the end, the sound will move to therapeutic percussion, helping to gently bring you back into the space. This is followed by a short period of silence for reflection. Afterwards, there will be a chance to share any reflections if you would like to.
